Claude Walsh-Adams is three years old when he explains to his parents that he wants to be a girl when he grows up. Once he starts kindergarten as a boy, Claude becomes so miserable that, with the advice of a “multi-degree-social-working-therapist-magician,” his parents decide to let him become Poppy. When the family moves to Seattle, they keep Poppy’s identity a secret, a decision that blows up in when she hits puberty. Frankel’s 2017 novel was a Reese Witherspoon x Hello Sunshine Book Club selection.
