Zorrie by Laird Hunt

Born early in the 20th century, Zorrie Underwood is a schoolgirl when her parents die from diphtheria. She is raised by an aunt who dies when Zorrie is 21. She takes a job painting radium on clocks and gauges and marries a kind farmer with a hundred acres. After her husband’s bomber crashes off the coast of Holland in 1943, Zorrie works the farm for years. Hunt's lyrical novel, which conveys Zorrie's whole life, her hopes, sorrows, loneliness and resolve, in less than 200 pages, was a finalist for the National Book Award.
