When 18-year-old Emmett Watson is returned home in June of 1954 by the warden of the juvenile work farm where he has just served time for involuntary manslaughter, he plans to head to California with his eight-year-old brother. Then he discovers that two friends from the farm hid in the warden's truck and want him to go with them to New York instead. Towles’ road trip novel is an old-fashioned narrative about farms, families and accidental friendships.
