Virgil Wander by Leif Enger
After he drives his car into icy Lake Superior, Virgil Wander, the middle-aged town clerk and owner of the decrepit local movie theater, decides to take his survival of this near-death experience as a sign of rebirth. He’s aided in this by a mysterious, kite-flying Norwegian stranger who has just arrived in town in search of the son he never knew. Enger’s 2018 novel gives magical realism a cozy Midwestern twist.
