VIRTUAL & IN-PERSON PROGRAM

Facilitators from the Witness Stones Project will share their award-winning curriculum, designed to enable attendees to tell the story of Dick Freedom, who was enslaved in Wallingford and later gained his freedom. Presenters will first discuss the colonial and early American economy and its ties to the West Indies trade, then give an overview of the history of enslavement in Connecticut, sharing archival evidence and research gathered by Chris Menapace. Finally, they will present documents related specifically to the life of Dick Freedom, who was enslaved by Moses Royce.

The Wallingford Historic Preservation Trust will make the primary documents about Dick Freedom available digitally for workshop attendees. Dennis Culliton, Witness Stones Executive Director, and Liz Lightfoot, Director of Operations, will be leading the presentation, which is sponsored by the Wallingford Historic Preservation Trust. The Witness Stones Project seeks to restore the history and honor the humanity of the enslaved individuals who helped build our communities. To learn more, visit https://witnessstonesproject.org.
